Healthy snacks during the course of breastfeeding

Breastfeeding involves a lot of energy. Your milk is sent to another person and the simple fact is that  the body needs to work overtime to produce that milk. No wonder you are always hungry ! And breastfeeding snacks might be the answer to it. But if you belong to the normal category of mothers, then some days you will be really lucky to have something as most of your time is consumed by the newborn baby. Therefore, healthy and nutritious snacks are the need of the hour and experts point to the fact that you should increase your intake by 300 to 500 calories a day if you are breastfeeding your baby.

But the focus should not be too much on calories only, ideally you should aim for 2000 a day and do keep in mind that consumption of calories would lead to low supply of milk. Now is not the time for eating as keep the portions under control, go on to eat healthy foods and go on to increase healthy snacks for breastfeeding moms to keep things under control. You need to take into account that eating snacks with a newborn baby in the house is a definite challenge of sorts. The best part about these snacks is that they will not go on to consume too much of your time and the preparation time involved is also a bare minimum. They can be enjoyed one handed even while holding the baby in the other hand.

Fresh vegetables along with fruits

 This is an impressive snack for a newborn mother. Just take into account that if you take of the skin of the fruit you are in a way removing the fiber which is filling you up. Along with it you are consuming the sugar in the fruit. So to be fuller and to consume less amount of sugar, consume fruits with skin where it is appropriate.


Almonds along with cashew nuts are a great source of proteins. You can grab a handful and stay away.  Raw nuts are described as one of the healthiest to eat; the roasted ones may satisfy the cravings for snacks. You can go on to consider nut butters as well. Say for example, apple pieces dropped in almond butter May way for a great afternoon snack. If you feel like you can sprinkle a little cinnamon.

Natural yoghurt

Is a great source of calcium and protein? You can opt for the Greek yoghurt as it is thicker and happens to be more decadent, but you just need to watch the sugar content. You can add fruit to yoghurt so that the nutritional value is enhanced.


You can opt for some pre packaged and this should not be processed for an easy snack and you can grab it from the fridge and consume it empty handed. Cheese is a rich source of protein along with calcium as well as vitamin B. You can enjoy it with whole grain crackers.
